Shariah compliance checklist

Seventeen questions in six groups. Answer each one yes, no, or not sure. At the end you’ll see what needs changing and which questions to take to a scholar.

Product and service

Source: Surah al-Ma’idah 5:90; Sahih Muslim 1513

The product or service itself is halal: no alcohol, pork, gambling, interest-based services or indecency involved.
I verify the origin and ingredients of what I buy from suppliers.
When I sell something I don’t yet hold or own, the terms and delivery date are stated plainly.

Money and financing

Source: Surah al-Baqarah 2:275

The business’s loans and financing are free of interest.
I don’t keep extra money charged for late payment as my own income.
Idle business cash isn’t parked in interest-bearing savings or fixed deposits.

Contracts and transactions

Source: Sahih Muslim 1513 (prohibition of gharar sales)

Price, quantity, quality and delivery date are written clearly into agreements.
In partnerships, the split of profit and loss is written and clear.
No contract term depends on the outcome of pure chance.

Marketing and sales

Source: Sahih Muslim 102; Surah al-Mutaffifin 83:1-3; Surah al-Ma’idah 5:90

My advertising doesn’t hide a product’s defects or limits.
I don’t use fake reviews, false ‘almost sold out’ claims or manufactured urgency.
Nobody has to pay to enter a lucky draw or contest I run.
My advertising uses no indecent imagery or musical instruments.

Staff and creditors

Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 2443; Sahih al-Bukhari 2287

Staff are paid in full and on time.
Terms, pay and duties are made clear at the point of hiring.
When I can afford to, I pay suppliers and creditors without delay.

Zakat

Source: Surah at-Tawbah 9:103

Zakat on business assets is calculated and paid every year.

وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا

Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba.

Surah al-Baqarah 2:275

This checklist flags risks; it doesn’t issue rulings. For anything marked ‘no’ or ‘not sure’, consult a qualified mufti.
